A special thank you to Shawn Tucker
of Three Feathers Native Curly Horses located in Kentucky.
In the early months of 2012, Shawn granted me permission to use her amazing photos of a rare breed of American Curly Horses. They have been breeding and raising American Curly Horses since 2004. They keep things as natural as possible in their care and I found their hypo-allergenic coat qualities fascinating.

These beauties have inspired a new direction with my Mustang Paintings. Soon you will find examples on my website! www.amylyn-bihrle.com.

Work in Progress of the Siamese Easter Bonnet Illustration.

Work in Progress of
~Siamese Easter Bonnet~

`I sketch the image in pencil and then outline the drawing using ink. This is going to be a 5x7 painting that will be matted to fit an 8x10.

I usually start with the background color.  I wet some areas with water before adding the watercolor.

Here I started painting some of the areas where I knew exactly what color I wanted to use. This helps me with adding colors later on to really make the illustration pop.

Here I got ahead of myself a little with adding the white fur detail on the chest and belly.

While painting the easter egg, I started adding yellows to the flowers and tips of the leaves. This makes the leaves have a nice highlight when you apply the greens.

I then painted the dark green areas before working my way up to the lighter shades. Decided to add an extra butterfly on the bonnet. The final touches are always the highlights in white, and then any thin lines such as whiskers are inked in along with my signature.  Once this is dry, I apply varnish for added protection. I use acrylic gloss varnish that really makes the colors stay vibrant with depth.

Once the varnish was dry, I matted it in black to fit an 8x10 Frame.
